Alan received his undergraduate degree from the Michigan State University and his law degree from the University of Michigan Law School in 1972. Following law school, he joined the Michigan State Appellate Defenders Office as an assistant appellate defender. He went on to serve as an assistant public defender and senior assistant public defender with Washtenaw County Public Defender’s Office in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Upon his appointment to the position of Territorial Public Defender, the late Chief District Court Judge Almeric Christian, Alan and his family arrived in the Virgin Islands in 1976. After serving as an assistant and Chief Public Defender, he was employed by Virgin Islands Department of Law as an assistant attorney general in the civil division, Chief of the Criminal Division, First Assistant Attorney General and labor counsel in the Office of Collective Bargaining. He served as Commissioner of the Department of Planning and Natural Resources from 1987 until 1991 when he entered private practice. In 2009 he was appointed Magistrate Judge in the Superior Court. He retired in 2013.

Serving was and is Alan’s calling. Throughout his professional career he has served on the governing body of the Baha’i Faith in the Americas, Virgin Islands Legal Services Board of Directors, Pine Peace School founding board member, the St. John Martin Luther King Day Planning Committee, and is currently a member of the Virgin Islands Advisory Committee for U. S. Civil Rights Commission.
