Alex Golubitsky is the Chief Legal Officer of Umami Labs, LLC. He has practiced tax law since 2007, and is licensed in Oregon, California, the United States Virgin Islands, Texas, and Virginia. His experience in cryptocurrency began in 2015 while specializing in territorial income tax incentives in the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. As many of his clients were in ad-tech, e-commerce and fintech, his eventual transition to a cryptocurrency practice was nearly inevitable.

In 2018, Alex became the general counsel of Brisa Max Holdings VI, LLC a family office and natural gas futures fund management company based in St. Thomas, VI. This role required, in addition to tax compliance, coordination of regulatory compliance with the SEC, CFTC, and FERC. During his time at Brisa Max, he helped structure forward energy agreements and managed family office investments in several different industries including security, tech, and cryptocurrency funds.

In 2021, Alex transitioned his practice to focus exclusively on cryptocurrency and defi. His experience addressing complex cross-border regulatory issues through planning and litigation is well suited to the rapidly developing regulatory landscape for defi. Solving these issues is critical to the broader adoption of cryptocurrency in a fashion which will serve to distribute access to markets and financial products.

Alex is an ardent supporter of the Virgin Islands Bar Association Young Lawyers Committee. He provided countless hours of pro bono legal assistance to Virgin Islanders in the aftermath of Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017, for which he was awarded the Legal Services and Virgin Islands Bar Association Pro Bono Project Award in 2018. Alex sponsored the Young Lawyer Leadership Summit in St. Thomas in 2019 and served as an instructor for the Summer Tenants’ Rights Clinic in 2021.
