Casey Payton, Esq.
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Casey is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley and Howard University School of Law. She began her career as the District Scheduler for Congresswoman Barbara Lee in Oakland, CA. After law school she relocated to the U.S. Virgin Islands to clerk for the Honorable Judge Debra S. Watlington in the Family Division of the Superior Court of the Virgin Islands. She is an experienced litigator with a demonstrated history of indigent defense, having served as Assistant Public Defender at the Office of the Territorial Public Defender and Senior Staff Attorney, leading the Disaster Advocacy Program and Pro Bono Program at Legal Services of the Virgin Islands, Inc.
She currently serves on the American Bar Association (“ABA”) Standing Committee on Pro Bono and Public Service and as Senior Advisor to the ABA Young Lawyers Division (“YLD”) Pro Bono and Public Service Team. She previously served as Director of the YLD Professional Development Team, Director of the YLD Member Resources Team, and Senior Advisor to the Virgin Islands Bar Association Young Lawyers Committee. She was the first student at Howard Law to be elected Student Co-Chair of the National LGBTQ+ Bar Association.
Casey has over a decade of experience developing highly effective progressive programming and community engagement on topics such as tenants’ rights, probate, disaster advocacy, pro bono advocacy, LGBTQ+, and young lawyer leadership development. She regularly develops and serves as a speaker for continuing legal education courses for the Virgin Islands Bar Association.
She’s been recognized locally and nationally, receiving the 2020 ABA Government and Public Sector Lawyers Division Dorsey Award, 2020 ABA On the Rise Top 40 Young Lawyers Award, 2018 ABA YLD Star of the Quarter, and 2018 Virgin Islands Bar Association President’s Award. She’s also been published by the ABA After the Bar digital publication for co-authoring an article on language justice.
