Ronald W. Belfon, Esq.
BOARD MEMBER
After serving as a social worker and tenant organizer in Philadelphia and the Bronx, Ron transitioned from social work to law as the vehicle to effect social change. As soon as he received his law degree from Howard University, Ron embarked on legal career as an academician and clinician at the University of Tennessee College of Law and at North Carolina Central University School of Law. During those years, he designed, delivered legal skills training, and served as a trainer for the Legal Services Corporation. He participated as a faculty member in regional training conducted by the National Institute for Trial Advocacy.
Ron transitioned again when he returned full-time to civil legal services and became Executive Director of Legal Services of the Virgin Islands. Legal Services received its first local funding and broadened its services to include community legal education, including self-help clinics and community based economic development as priorities of service. A brief period as Deputy Director of Community Legal Services in Philadelphia gave him additional legal expertise as he managed and worked with some of the finest lawyers for the poor in the nation.
He returned to the Virgin Islands as the lawyer for the newly formed Department of Planning and Natural Resources. In addition to his environmental law duties, and his legal support for preservation of the patrimony of the VI, he served as Coastal Zone Management Counsel.
Ron has maintained a private practice which supported large scale land development, including hotels, condominiums and marinas throughout the VI. Additionally, he has represented small business owners, injured persons, employment claimants, landlords & tenants, mortgage foreclosure defendants and bankruptcy clients. His practice includes real estate transactions, wills, trusts, estate planning and probate. Ron is the third certified mediator in the Virgin Islands and successfully mediated over a hundred cases with a high rate of resolution. He has served the VI Bar as Secretary and as a member of the Board of Governors.
Ron is glad to be a part of VIJI as it seeks to fill existing gaps in the access to justice and the availability of affordable legal services for our residents.
